Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about HopLife and how to get the most out of it.
Getting Started
HopLife is a personal and family organizer designed to take the stress out of daily life. You get a personal space for your own tasks, notes and budget, plus shared calendars, lists and helpers to keep everyone in sync, whether it's family, friends or roommates.
Choose "Get started" or "Create a free account" on the home page and fill in the sign-up form; HopLife uses a secure sign-in provider. Once you're in, you can create a group for your family or join one you've been invited to.
Family & Social
Groups are groups (like Family, Friends, or Projects) that you can create or join. Once inside a group, all members share events, tasks, and activities. You can manage your groups, switch between them, and invite others via email.
The Contacts area allows you to connect directly with other HopLife users. You can search by email, send connection requests, and manage your network. Having people in your contacts makes it easier to invite them to groups or assign them tasks.
Export your contacts from Google as a file, then import it in HopLife and choose who to add. Everyone you pick gets a friend request by email. It works the same with Apple Contacts and Outlook.
- On a computer, open contacts.google.com.
- To export everyone, don't select anyone. To export only some people, tick them first.
- Click Export (if you don't see it, open the menu with three dots at the top of the list).
- Choose "vCard (for iOS Contacts)" or "Google CSV" and click Export. A contacts.vcf or contacts.csv file downloads.
- In HopLife, open Friends and click Import (it's also on your Profile, under "Import friends").
- Choose the file. HopLife lists everyone who has an email address; people without one are left out. Nothing is sent yet.
- Search by name or email, tick the people you want, and click Send friend requests.
- Each person gets an email with your friend request and joins your friends once they accept. People already on HopLife also see the request in the app.
- Friends and people you've already asked are marked and can't be ticked again, so importing the same file twice is safe.
- From Apple: in iCloud.com Contacts (or the Contacts app on a Mac), select the contacts and choose Export vCard. From Outlook: People > Manage > Export contacts gives a CSV file.
- Only send requests to people who know you: the email comes from HopLife in your name.
Organization
The Events area keeps everyone on the same page. You can create events, specify the location, date, and members involved. View them in a daily agenda, weekly, or monthly layout. Colored tags help identify which group an event belongs to.
In the Tasks area, you can create to-do items and assign them to yourself or any member of your groups. You can set due dates, mark them as important, and track their status. Everyone in the assigned group will see the updates.
Make a private calendar link in HopLife and add it to the calendar you already use. HopLife events then appear there next to everything else and update on their own. You can make one for everything you see, or one per group.
- In HopLife, open your Profile and find "Calendar subscriptions".
- Click "Make a link" next to "My calendar", or next to a group to see only that group's events.
- For Google Calendar, click "Add to Google Calendar" and then Add. Do this on a computer: Google's phone app can't add calendars by link, but the calendar then shows on your phone too.
- On an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or with Outlook, tap "Add to Apple Calendar or Outlook" and confirm Subscribe.
- That's it: HopLife events appear in that calendar and stay up to date.
- Google Calendar checks subscribed calendars every few hours, sometimes up to a day, so changes show there later than in HopLife. Apple Calendar and Outlook usually check every hour.
- The link is shown only when you make it. Anyone who has it can see those events, so keep it private. If it gets out, make a new link: the old one stops working straight away.
- It's read-only: add and change events in HopLife, not in Google or Apple Calendar.
- A group's link stops working if you leave the group. After you turn a link off, the calendar app keeps its last copy until you remove that calendar there.
Export the calendar from Google as an .ics file, then import that file from your HopLife profile. You choose which events come in and who they're for. It works the same with Apple Calendar and Outlook, which also export .ics files.
- On a computer, open calendar.google.com. Google's phone app can't export, so use a browser.
- Click the gear icon at the top right, then Settings.
- In the left menu, under "Settings for my calendars", click the calendar you want, then "Export calendar". A .zip file downloads.
- Open the .zip file (on Windows, right-click it and choose Extract All; on a Mac, double-click it). Inside is an .ics file.
- In HopLife, open your Profile and click Import under "Import a calendar".
- Choose the .ics file. HopLife lists its events, with the upcoming ones already ticked. Nothing is saved yet.
- Untick anything you don't want, choose who gets the events (you, friends, a group or some of its members) and click Import.
- To export every calendar at once, use Settings > Import & export > Export in Google Calendar. The .zip then has one .ics file per calendar; import them one by one.
- Importing the same file again is safe: events already in HopLife are skipped, so later you can import an updated export to bring in just the new events.
- Events marked "Repeat simplified" repeat in a way HopLife can't show exactly, like "every 2nd Tuesday" or with skipped dates. Check them after importing.
- This is a one-time copy: changes you make later in Google Calendar don't reach HopLife on their own.
Repeating events and location sharing are now part of HopLife. We keep adding what families ask for most: send us your ideas with the Feedback button in the app.
